A Shopify Plus migration costs between $5,000 and $350,000, and that spread is not evasion — it is the honest answer, because the number is set almost entirely by how much of your current build is bespoke. Below is what each band buys, what moves you between them, and which line items get quietly inflated.
The platform fee is the part nobody argues about
Shopify Plus starts at $2,300 monthly on a three-year contract, or $2,500 on a one-year term — roughly $27,600 to $30,000 a year. Above about $800,000 in monthly GMV that shifts to a variable rate. Shopify does not charge you to migrate.
That fee is the floor, and it is fixed. Everything below is the build.
What each band actually buys
| $5,000 – $15,000 | A themed store on a paid theme with light customisation. Products, customers and orders come across with an app or a CSV. No custom integrations. Realistic for a catalogue under a few thousand simple SKUs and a business with no ERP. |
|---|---|
| $15,000 – $75,000 | The band most growth-stage brands land in. Custom theme work, a real design system, two or three integrations (ERP, 3PL, subscriptions), URL mapping and redirects done properly, and a staged launch. Most agency quotes sit here. |
| $80,000 – $350,000+ | Enterprise replatform. Headless or heavily customised storefront, B2B with company accounts and price lists, multi-region and multi-currency, bespoke middleware, and a data migration that needs its own project plan. |
The band is chosen by your integrations and your data, not by your revenue. A $2M brand on Shopify with three apps moves for less than a $2M brand on Magento with a custom ERP bridge.
The five things that actually move the number
- Source platform. Shopify to Plus is largely a plan change and a theme project. Magento, custom builds and anything with a bespoke checkout are a rebuild, not a move.
- Integration count. Every system that must keep talking — ERP, PIM, 3PL, subscriptions, loyalty, tax — is a discrete piece of work. This is the largest driver above the entry band.
- Catalogue shape, not SKU count. Configurable products, bundles and per-customer pricing are what cost money. Fifty thousand simple SKUs are cheaper than five hundred complex ones.
- B2B requirements. Company accounts, price lists, quotes and net terms change the build materially, and are the usual reason a project needs Plus at all.
- Historic data. Bringing years of orders and customers across, with working URLs and preserved rankings, is a genuine workstream. Skipping it is a legitimate way to cut cost, and a legitimate way to lose traffic.
Where quotes get inflated
Three line items are worth questioning whenever you see them:
- “Data migration” priced per record. Migration is largely scripted. Volume affects runtime far more than effort. Ask what is genuinely manual.
- A rebuilt checkout. On Plus, checkout is Shopify’s. What you can customise is bounded, so anything quoted as a bespoke checkout deserves close questioning.
- Theme work sold as strategy. A theme install is a theme install. It becomes expensive when it is genuinely a design project — make sure you are buying the one you think you are.
The reverse is also worth knowing: the cheapest quote usually excludes redirects and historic data, which is how a migration ends up costing traffic instead of money.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a Shopify Plus migration cost?
Between $5,000 and $350,000 for the build, plus the Plus platform fee of $2,300 to $2,500 a month. Most growth-stage brands land between $15,000 and $75,000. The band is set by your integrations, your catalogue structure and your source platform.
Does Shopify charge for the migration itself?
No. Shopify does not charge a migration fee. Every cost above is build work and the ongoing plan.
How long does a move to Shopify Plus take?
Four to eight weeks at the entry band, eight to sixteen for a typical agency project, and six months or more for an enterprise replatform with B2B and multi-region requirements.
Will migrating hurt my SEO?
Only if redirects are handled badly. Every old URL needs a 301 to its closest equivalent, and that mapping is the most important deliverable in the project. Done properly, rankings hold. Skipped, they do not.
